MATH 757: Topics in Topology (Fall 2004)
Instructor: Nathan Broaddus
In this course we will explore the topology and geometry of manifolds through the prism of foliations and laminations. Our focus will be on the rich subtopic of 2-dimensional foliations of 3-manifolds.
Topics include:
- Definitions and examples of foliations
- Existence of foliations for 3-manifolds
- Reeb stability
- Novikov's Theorem
- Finite depth foliations
Prerequisites for this course are algebraic topology and minimal familiarity with 2 and 3 dimensional topology.
