In the '80s, A. Hatcher proved the Smale Conjecture asserting that the group of diffeomorphisms of S^3 retracts to the isometry group. A long-standing problem in geometric analysis has been to give a geometric proof of this result. I will explain joint work with Liokumovich where we prove the analogous statement for RP^3 using the min-max theory of minimal surfaces.
