MATH 6490 - Lie Algebras
Birgit Speh, fall 2016.
The course is an introduction to non compact Lie groups and important classes of homogeneous spaces, namely symmetric spaces and flag varieties, which are at the heart of a great deal of important modern mathematics. If time permits we will also correspondences of representations which were emphasized by Howe, though important examples occur in older work of Frobenius and Schur, Weyl, Weil and others.
The course can be considered as a continuation of the Lie groups course taught in the spring, but MATH 6500 is not a prerequisite.
