Classical Papers in Applied Math (also Computer Science 722)

The 20th century saw a remarkable flourishing of applications of math. New disciplines like game theory, information theory, nonlinear dynamics and theoretical computer science emerged out of applied mathematics during the past 100 years. In this course, students will read and analyze classic papers on applied mathematics, one paper per week. Course requirements include student-led presentations made to the rest of the class. Papers have been selected both for their impact and their elegance. Readings include Von Neumann, Courant, Lorenz and other pioneers.

It is not expected that this course will be offered again in the near future.

Prerequisites: Analysis and algebra at the level of Math 413/431; at least one course in applied math (either in an engineering, math or science department.)
