MATH 7870: Set Theory Spring 2013
Instructor: Justin Moore
Texts:Set Theory by Kunen
This course will be based around Chapters 1,2,7,8 of Kunen’s text Set Theory (either edition is acceptable). This course will start with an accelerated treatment of the basic concepts of set theory: ordinals, cardinals, the axioms of ZFC, transfinite induction and recursion. The goal will be to begin the discussion of forcing as soon as possible, returning to notions in combinatorial set theory such as stationary and closed unbounded set, Jensen’s diamond principle, and set theoretic trees as they are needed in examples (so chapter 2 will be broken up and covered throughout the treatment of forcing). An emphasis will be placed on examples and the construction of partial orders to be used in forcing constructions.
