MATH 6150: Mathematical Methods in Physics (fall 2008)
Instructor: Leonard Gross
This is not a "theorem - proof" type course, but will describe mathematical techniques with some reasonable precision.
The course will cover the following topics:
- Hilbert space and orthonormal bases.
- The Sturm-Liouville theory of second-order linear ordinary differential equations: Green functions.
- Generalized functions and the Fourier transform.
- Applications to the heat equation, Poisson's equation and the wave equation.
- Laplace transform.
- Asymptotic expansions. (If there is popular demand, this topic could be replaced by differential geometry.)
We will follow a set of notes for the course.
